How to shift a house in the rain
Rain does not wait for a moving day. In Pakistan the heavy rain is mostly July to September. Lahore, Islamabad, and the northern cities also get rain in winter. You can still shift the house. The job is to keep cartons off the wet ground and to cover the mattress before it leaves the room.
A wet carton looks fine for an hour. By the next morning the bottom is soft and the books inside are wavy. That is the problem to avoid, not a few drops on a blanket.
The day before
Wrap mattresses and sofas inside the room, while the floor is dry. Do not wait until the pieces are in the street. Put this week’s clothes, medicines, school bags, and your documents in a bag you will carry yourself. A truck is the wrong place for the only copy of a passport.
If you live in a society, ask what time a truck may stand at the gate and whether it must leave when the rain gets heavy. A guard’s nod in the morning is not the same as a written time slot. Tell Marsoos that limit when you book, so the crew is not stuck outside with an open load.
On the day
Load from the door, not from a pile on the footpath. If the lane is flooded, stop and call before the truck drives in. A stuck truck costs more time than waiting an hour. Plastic sheet over the load matters. A blanket on top is not a roof.
At the new house, do not leave the glass carton in a puddle by the gate while the crew looks for the lift. Carry that one in, or keep it on the truck until the path is clear.
What to leave unwrapped if it is already damp
Do not roll a damp carpet and close it for two days. It smells and the colour can run. Do not shut wet shoes in a carton. Dry them in the old house, or carry them loose. If a mattress got wet, say so before it is wrapped. Wrapped moisture is worse than a wet cover you can see.
If you need to wait
A delay of one dry morning is often cheaper than a damaged bedroom. If the new house is also not ready, storage is a real option. It is not an excuse to leave the goods on the truck overnight in the rain.
