Google Instant fills in “house shifting” with electricity, gas, and the meter because families get this wrong more often than they get the truck wrong. The furniture leaves. The old house still has your name on a bill, or the new house has someone else’s arrears on the connection. You stand in the dark on…
People type “how to pack a sofa for house shifting” because the sofa is the piece that gets stuck. It looks fine in the lounge. On a Pakistan staircase it hits the rail, the fabric tears on the door latch, or the crew discover an L-shaped unit that will not turn the landing. The truck…
A carton that is fine on a one-day house truck often fails on a ship. Sea cargo is stacked, moved, and left in a steel container that can get hot and damp. Clothes, books and kitchen things arrive wet or crushed when the box was a thin market carton, filled to bursting, or left with…
A washing machine that still holds water is a heavy, dripping box. On the stairs it soaks the cartons below it. If it travels on its side, the drum can shift and the machine may never spin quietly again. This is a different job from the fridge. Emptying and standing the fridge is in prepare…
The flight or the ship can be on time, and you still wait. Relatives in Dubai, London or Toronto hear that the cargo has “arrived”, then nothing happens for ten days. In that gap you pay storage at the destination, and you start to think the goods are lost. Arrival is not the same as…
A cracked LED is one of the most common complaints after a house shift in Pakistan. The set looked fine on the wall. On the truck it lay flat under a duvet. At the new house the screen shows a dark line that will not go away. Replacement often costs more than the moving bill….
Sending a few cartons or a whole house from Pakistan to the UK is two jobs: packing here, and clearing UK customs there. Families often have the cartons ready and then discover the UK side wants a Transfer of Residence application (ToR1) and a list that matches the boxes. This article is about the papers,…
Most Pakistani wardrobes are moved the hard way: clothes stuffed into shopping bags, drawers left full, and shoes thrown on top of shirts. The bags tear on the stairs. The wardrobe joints crack because they were lifted with the weight still inside. And the first night in the new house is spent hunting for a…
Taking a car out of Karachi is a different job from packing a house. The car has to be driven or winched onto a carrier, strapped so it cannot roll, and delivered with the same mileage and the same paintwork. People search for car carrier, car transport and car movers, all with the same intent:…
A house move in Karachi does not always line up with the day your new keys are ready. The landlord wants the old flat empty, the new DHA house is still being painted, or you are flying out and need somewhere dry for the furniture until you return. That is when people search for storage…
