What You Cannot Send in Cargo from Pakistan to Dubai and the UAE

Families send a lot from Pakistan to relatives in Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi: clothes, kitchen things, books, gifts, and often food from home. Most of it is fine. A few items are banned by UAE customs, and some need a permit before they can enter. One wrong item can hold the whole shipment, so check the list before you pack.

Once you know what can go, pack the boxes for the ship: how to pack cartons for sea cargo from Pakistan.

Banned: do not send these to the UAE

Dubai Customs lists these as prohibited, which means no permit will clear them:

  • Narcotics of any kind, including poppy seeds (khashkhash), which many Pakistani kitchens use
  • Paan and betel leaves
  • Cooked and home-made food
  • Electronic cigarettes
  • Used, reconditioned, or retreaded tyres
  • Gambling tools and machines
  • Counterfeit currency
  • Ivory and rhino horn
  • Printed material, pictures, or statues that go against Islamic teachings or public morals

Restricted: only with a UAE permit

These can enter only when the right UAE authority has approved them, so they should not go in a normal household box:

  • Medicines and medical devices, which need Ministry of Health approval. Carry your own medicine with a prescription instead of shipping it.
  • Plants, seeds, soil, fertiliser, and live animals
  • Food products, cosmetics, and personal-care products in larger quantities
  • Alcohol
  • Radio transmitters and some wireless equipment
  • Weapons, ammunition, fireworks, and anything that can explode
  • Books, films, and other media in commercial quantities

The UAE also checks quantity. Ten new phones or fifty suits look like trade, not a gift, and are treated as commercial cargo with duty. Keep gifts personal and in normal amounts.

What usually travels without trouble

  • Used clothes, shoes, and bedding
  • Kitchen utensils and crockery, wrapped well
  • Books for personal use
  • Used electronics for your own home, such as a laptop or a TV
  • Factory-sealed, labelled dry food in small personal amounts, which customs may still inspect

Mistakes Pakistani families make most often

  • Putting home-made achar, mithai, or frozen food from Ammi’s kitchen into a cargo box. Home-made food is banned, even when it is sealed well.
  • Sending a bag of khashkhash or a supply of paan for an uncle. Both are on the banned list.
  • Packing a three-month supply of tablets for a parent. Medicines need approval; the patient should carry them with a prescription.
  • Hiding a few items for a shop inside a household box. Customs treats the whole box as commercial when it finds them.

Pack it so customs can check it fast

Number every box and write a matching packing list in English. Customs may open any carton, and a clear list saves days. Keep receipts for new items. Our personal effects documents guide explains the papers, and air or sea freight helps you choose the speed.

Rules change, so the final word is always the authority’s current list, such as the Dubai Customs prohibited and restricted goods page. When in doubt, ask before you pack.
