What unaccompanied baggage is

Unaccompanied baggage, often written UAB, is your own luggage sent as air cargo instead of checked in with your ticket. PIA describes it as personal effects and articles of the passenger: clothes, portable musical instruments, sports equipment and similar things. It is booked at an airline cargo office or through a cargo agent, gets its own airway bill, and travels on a cargo or passenger flight close to your travel date.

What it is not

  • Furniture and household furnishing. That is a household cargo shipment.
  • Money, jewellery, watches, cameras, tickets or documents. Carry those with you.
  • Liquor and perfume, machinery and spare parts.
  • Trade goods. Anything for sale is commercial cargo with an invoice.

How to book it

  • Book at least a day before you fly. PIA recommends booking UAB at least one day before departure.
  • Go yourself. The passenger usually has to be present at the cargo office for customs clearance.
  • Bring your passport and ticket, and a list of every carton and what is in it.
  • Seal and number the cartons. Write your name and destination address on each one.
  • Keep the airway bill. You need its number to track the shipment and to collect it.

If you are using a cargo agent, ask whether the shipment will be booked as your unaccompanied baggage in your name, which airline carries it, and who clears it at the destination.

At the destination

You collect it from the airline’s cargo terminal or through a clearing agent, and the destination customs decide what is duty-free. Some countries let unaccompanied baggage arrive only within a set time of your own arrival, and some ask for a separate declaration. When to choose household cargo instead

If the list includes a bed, a sofa, a fridge, a washing machine or a TV, it is household cargo. Household cargo is surveyed, packed, documented under the destination’s household rules, and shipped by air or sea. Do not try to squeeze a household into baggage cartons; it fails at the cargo counter or at destination customs.
